Disconnected from Yahweh?
There is only one thing that keeps us disconnected from our Heavenly Father – sin.
It can start out small, something slightly off balance. You know it’s there, but it seems so insignificant, so you ignore it. But sin is incredibly insidious. It can slip in and become a growing cancer to our soul – it prohibits us from connecting and enjoying our relationship with Yahweh. It keeps us from hearing Him.
There are all types of sins, but people think most of the big sins – murder, adultery, large scale theft, etc. They feel quite confident that real sin hurts other people.
All wicked actions are sin, …. 1 John 5:17
It’s the small sins that we don’t consider serious that can easily cause us to disconnect from our Heavenly Father.
- Who doesn’t worry?
- Everyone gossips…
- I don’t mean to be judgmental, but… They made their bed, let them sleep in it!
- How did she buy that? I don’t have that and I make more money.
- I don’t speak to them anymore.
- I’m not helping him, I told them not to do it.
- I don’t know what they will do with my money, so I’m not giving it to them.
- My lunch is only 30 minutes, but I’m taking an hour – no one will know. Plus, everybody does it.
… and so on and so on. Sound familiar?
These are just a few “gateway” sins that open doors for greater sins. They desensitize us to the impact of sin and encourage us to ignore the voice of the Holy Spirit’s conviction. We all do them at one time or another; and, if everyone is doing them then they don’t really matter…
… but Yahweh Whispers
Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God. 1 John 3:4
- We worry, versus living in faith.
- We discuss another person’s faults with other humans instead of praying for that person.
- We decide what others should do because we think we know better.
- We look at the possessions of others, and despair because we do not have the same.
- We harbor anger instead of cultivate forgiveness.
- We hoard our possessions (in the name of protecting them) when we should share with those who have or none.
- We take what we have not earned versus acting with integrity
We believe our small infractions don’t matter. We believe they won’t hurt us or anyone else. We believe our selfishness is justified because the other person should have done better/differently. In truth, all sin hurts the sinner first and most.
So how do we reconnect with our Heavenly Father?
… If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9 NLT
Our confession of sin is not a punishment, nor does it lead to punishment from God. It is recognition that we realize we were wrong. Genuine repentance strengthens our relationship with Yahweh and clears the chaos from our heads, allowing us to hear His voice whispering to us.
Yahweh already knows our wrongdoings; you can NOT surprise Him. The Psalmist said it so clearly:
You spread out our sins before you— our secret sins—and you see them all.
Psalms 90:8 NLT
Without confession and repentance of sin, we weaken our ability to benefit from our relationship with God. Although Yahweh does not leave us nor abandon us, sin keeps us from accepting this undeniable truth. We become vulnerable to the voice of the enemy who allows us to justify our actions and not change our behaviors. We all suffer consequences of our actions – regardless of repentance; but unconfessed sin can evolve into stubbornness and self-righteousness and then sins that lead to the death of our relationship with our Heavenly Father.
‘Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things … So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death … For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.’ Romans 8:5-8
Regardless of the sin in our lives, Yahweh is clear in His direction to us.
Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins …. 2 Chronicles 7:14
Repent, then, and turn to [Yahweh], so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, Acts 3:19
I will cleanse them of their sins against me and forgive all their sins of rebellion.
Jeremiah 33:8
What if there are decades of sin between you and Yahweh? What if you feel you are too far gone? The apostle Paul answers that question so eloquently…
‘Can anything ever separate us from His love? Does it mean He no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Romans 8:35,38-39
Confession is the first step to strengthen your relationship with Yahweh. Confession is a constant for us, because sin is constant for us.
We don’t confess, go about our lives, and never confess again.
Confession must be continuous and consistent, because we will always sin. As we continue to confess, our relationship with our Heavenly Father grows stronger, and our behaviors start to change.
‘Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.’ Romans 8:12-14
Our prayer for you…
Heavenly Father, we ask that You strengthen the faith of the one receiving this Whisper. Please show them Your love for them and Your grace. Show them in each moment, in each today, and in each tomorrow. Teach them that everything good comes from You. Teach them that YOU understand their weaknesses, you love their humanity. Their sins are nothing compared to Your love. Teach them that they simply need to turn to You and confess their sins – the little ones and the big ones. Teach them to trust Your forgiveness and love – regardless of their actions. Help them to create a bridge of faith to You, so they may accept the ultimate gift of Your son. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. Romans 8:2 NLT
