As children, we may often wonder if the family we have is really our family. We may tell ourselves that our parents can not possibly be our parents – there must be another family to which we really belong.

In truth, as children of The Most High, we DO belong to a most powerful family. While our physical bodies are the byproducts of our physical human parents, our souls (or the energy that empowers us) is the byproduct of a most powerful and infinitely intelligent source. That source created each of us with purpose and forethought. Our Creator gave us our lives as the utmost expression of love and empowerment. However, our human self – mental, physical, and emotional – does not automatically recognize or acknowledge the source of power that lies within us. We believe that our human self is where it both begins and ends. We believe that our parents “had us” and that is just it.

At the beginning of creation, Yahweh powerfully commanded….

…“Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So [Yahweh] created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. Gen 1:26‭-‬27 NIV‬‬

This section of Scripture is often generalized and brushed over. But there are key indicators of the who, what, and why of our existence.

First, let’s look at context. It is the beginning of time, the creation and start of our world. Yahweh had put our universe in motion. Stars were formed, the planets were in rotation, the oceans and land were in place, and He had created many of the life forms who would live here. At the end of this creative burst, he changes tactics a little. He says…

Let US make mankind in OUR image, in OUR likeness, so that they may rule…

The “who” in this context is our Heavenly Creator – Yahweh. After creating the beauty of the world, He decided to create a being in His own likeness. The other forms he created were not like Him. In all their beauty and uniqueness, they were not like Him. He wanted something to reflect and receive His love.

The “what” was the form He created – us. Yahweh created us in His own likeness with intrinsic value. He tells us that we belong to Him.

But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. Isaiah 43:1 NIV

Yahweh planned us. He spoke His vision and that vision was us.

The “why” of our existence is both complex and incredibly simple.

“…so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground...”

…but there’s more…

For He chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will—
Ephesians 1:4‭-‬5 NIV

Our Heavenly Father created us for His pleasure and will – because He desired to do so.

…but there’s more…

His desire for us was so strong, and his love for us so great

“…neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39 NIV

We are His. YOU are His.

Through faith in Christ, through Yahweh’s grace and love – YOU are HIS.

We are family. You are loved.
