When someone causes you hurt or shame, it is not a natural reaction to forgive them and let them off the hook. It feels better to think of revenge. You’ve been hurt, you’re angry, and you are frustrated that they got away with hurting you. Who wants to forgive? You want payment, retribution, vindication!!
Take a deep breath…listen…
“Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord” Rom 12:19
But you are FAR away from just letting it go and trusting Yahweh’s to handle it. You don’t want to forgive. YOU want that person to pay for what THEY did!
“In your anger, do not sin”
The truth is, even if you carried out your desires against the one that hurt you, you will not be happy and will hurt yourself as well – if not more.
The weight of responding to an offense with an offense leads to death – of something. It could be the death of a relationship, a career, your personal peace, your family’s peace, your goals and dreams. Much worse, it lead to the death of your relationship with your Heavenly Father.
God is not asking us not to feel the offense. He is not asking us to accept mistreatment and be left unheard. He is not saying that our hurt feelings are irrelevant. Instead, He is asking us to trust Him to do the work in your place. He is asking us to extend to others the same grace and mercy that He freely gives us continually – forgiveness.
Forgiveness is an opportunity for YOU to be free of the offense. It allows us to give the offense to Yahweh, knowing that He will handle the offense and it will not have the power to control over your mind and will. It is a reflection of our trust and hope in God.
Yahweh tells us…
“Be kind and compassionate to one another forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you.” Eph 4:32
God is our vindicator and ultimately the only one that can teach someone a lesson and change their heart. Turn your hurt into an opportunity to grow in Christ. Ask him to help you to forgive others, and ask Him to forgive you.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
When you are struggling to let go of past hurts, He is there to heal your wounds. Open your heart to Him. He is faithful to hear you. Let go of the hurt caused by others and let Yahweh handle your future.
“Allow me to cleanse you from your sins and your hurts. Release the control to me and trust me to use it for you benefit and my glory. I will help you overcome. You are made in my image, reflect my forgiveness and love. Continue to forgive as I continue to forgive.” 1 John 1:9
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me. Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven times” Matthew 18:21-22
