In the beginning of time, words set creation in motion. Yahweh spoke, and nothingness became something amazing.
As His children, we also have power in our words. We speak and things move.
This is not a power to be used lightly. Unfortunately, we do so all the time.
- We speak foolishness instead of wisdom.
- We speak curses instead of blessings.
- We speak pain instead of healing.
- We speak death instead of life.
- We speak fear instead of courage.
- We speak doubt instead of faith.
We say….
- I/You/We/They can’t do that
- It will never happen
- That’s impossible
- You shouldn’t
Often, our words are born of fear or inadequacy. We truly believe the words we say and then feel validated when our words are correct. We believe that we are “right” or ‘honest”. We believe we are doing someone a favor by telling them what we believe they should know. We often excuse our words by saying we did not mean them. We often belittle their impact and call them “just words”.
But Yahweh Whispers…
Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Prov 14:4
Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. Prov 12:18
‘With their words, the godless destroy their friends, but knowledge will rescue the righteous. ‘
Proverbs 11:9
‘Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue. ‘
Proverbs 11:12
‘A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret. ‘Proverbs 11:13
‘A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. ‘ Proverbs 15:1
‘The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. ‘Proverbs 15:2
‘The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. ‘Proverbs 15:4
‘The lips of a king speak as an oracle, and his mouth does not betray justice.’ Proverbs 16:10
‘Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value the one who speaks what is right.’ Proverbs 16:13
‘The lips of the wise spread knowledge, but the hearts of fools are not upright.’ Proverbs 15:7
‘Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.’ Proverbs 16:24
‘The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.’
Proverbs 18:4
‘A fool’s lips walk into a fight, and his mouth invites a beating. A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul. ‘ Proverbs 18:6-7
‘ Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. ‘ Proverbs 18:21
‘Wise words are more valuable than much gold and many rubies. ‘ Proverbs 20:15
‘A gossip goes around telling secrets, so don’t hang around with chatterers. ‘ Proverbs 20:19
‘When arguing with your neighbor, don’t betray another person’s secret. Others may accuse you of gossip, and you will never regain your good reputation. ‘Proverbs 25:9-10
‘Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow. ‘ Proverbs 25:18
Words DO have power. If they did not, why do we fear the words of others? Why are impacted by the words of others. Why do we respond to the words of others?
What would happen if once a day we took the time to…
- Speak blessings
- Speak joy
- Speak love
- Speak life
- Speak courage
- Speak esteem
- Speak faith
Yahweh Whispers
Your own soul is nourished when you are kind, but you destroy yourself when you are cruel. Proverbs 11:17
Our prayer for you…
Heavenly Father, remind me that my words are powerful. Remind me to think before I speak. Give me words to encourage those who hear me. Give me words to heal those who hear me. Give me words to strengthen their esteem of those who hear me. Give me words to increase the faith of those who hear me. Most of all, give me courage to speak Your words, because I know Your words will always accomplish what you tell them to accomplish.
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. James 1:26 (NLT)
‘I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” ‘Matthew 12:36-37
